To say I’m anxious and ready to snap wouldn’t be accurate. I’m so beyond that point that I’m ready to bare my teeth when Ston turns back to look at me critically. There’s something more on his mind even though the spaceship is empty. He’s seen that for himself.

Did he not buy the story about the clothes? I can’t say it’s necessarily easy for me to understand the idea of two members of the same sex fucking, but humans aren’t Novans. There are clear differences between our species. I, for one, am not going to judge what a male or a female wishes to do, but I wouldn’t think that a female who prefers females would volunteer to come here, and what if that is what’s going through Ston’s mind right now? Is it possible that a female could like fucking both a female and a male? There are the rare Novans who would all fuck each other at the same time, always one male and multiple females, but I never thought before that the females might interact during those occasions with anyone but the male. I’ve never wanted more than one female at a time, however. The thought never appealed to me, but if another wants to, they should do as they wish.

Ston won’t meet my gaze as he clears his throat. “I have my orders,” he says stiffly. “I hope you will listen and do as you are told.”

“Why wouldn’t I?” I ask easily. If I cooperate, I’ll be able to get away from him and finally be able to return to my search. The longer Rachel is gone and away from me, the more devastated I am. If anything should happen to her, I don’t think I could forgive myself.

The guard nods, but he doesn’t say anything.

“What do you need from me?” I press.

“Come with me,” is all Ston will stay.

“Very well,” I mutter, and I follow him back to the centuricmobile.

For the entire drive, I grit my teeth and try to look out without being obvious about it. I don’t think Rachel would have gone this way, so I’m not surprised when I don’t see her anywhere.

Eventually, we pull up in front of two tall buildings. Ston climbs down first, and I follow suit, trailing him all the way inside the building the centuricmobile parked in front of. I glance behind at the driver, but he remains staring straight ahead, ignoring everyone and everything. Being a driver must be a boring job.

“Are you going to give me a clue as to what we’re doing here?” I ask, trying to hide my ardent desire to speed things up.

“We’re almost there.”

He brings me up several flights of stairs and then brings me into a room. Several females are inside already, all sitting under the watchful gaze of another guard.

“This the pilot?” the guard asks. At Ston’s nod, the guard grunts.

“You can do ahead,” Ston says. “We’ll be fine. Thank you, Ake.”

Ake walks by me. “Good luck,” he mutters, casting his gaze on a female with blond hair.
